Overview of Role This is a behavioral health rounding nurse position that is embedded within the psychiatry consult liaison team. The premise of this role is support, resource and education medical-surgical nurses on the floors on how to care for patients with behavioral health needs. The BHRN will act as a liaison brining information from the behavioral health team to the nurses/providers and from the nurses/providers back to the behavioral health team. They will round on all IVCs, physician holds in the ED, patients on the psych consult list and the behavioral health RN consult list. BHRN will respond to all behavioral health emergencies in the hospital and assist the teams during these emergencies with de-escalation techniques, medication administration and following care plans that have been created. There are also daily chart audits that will be conducted regarding a variety of regulatory needs. The BHRN works closely with inpatient medical-surgical nursing, nursing leadership and interacts with disciplines throughout the hospital that may be caring for patients with behavioral health needs.
Shifts 3 - 12 hr. shifts per week. DAYS
- 7a to 7p.
Weekends and holidays as required per unit guidelines.
Occ Summary Round on new or specific patients prior to AM huddle.
Provide handoff to Behavioral Health Tech and input on assignments, as indicated.
Serve as primary clinical resource and mentor as indicated for BHT in their capacity as PCA.
AM and PM huddles with BH team (may be replaced with PRN contact, as determined by MD).
Round with psychiatrist and/or psychologist on new consults.
Maintain shared BHRN list in EPIC and update as needed.
Complete new BHRN consults and follow-up rounding notes with a primary focus on documenting behavioral observations and non-pharmacologic recommendations to facilitate care.
Lead TCT response (refer to Disruptive Behavior Response policy).
Implement behavioral intervention plans on appropriate patients as developed and directed by psychologist.
Initiate Interdisciplinary Behavioral Rounds if needed for specific cases.
Provide informal teaching on behavioral health care in the context of supporting floor nurses, BHTs as well as non-BHT patient care attendants; help staff conceptualize challenging behaviors in a functional manner, learn to set appropriate and flexible limits and integrate principles of positive reinforcement into patient care.
When needed for specific IVC/PH patients overnight, collaborate with Charge Nurse to determine clinical appropriateness, and enter Nursing Communication orders for, phone call and visitor privileges.
Participate on Mental Health Committee to develop relevant policy and procedures impacting care of BH patients.
Other duties as determined by psychiatry/agreed upon by BH team.
Independently plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
Plan, provide, supervise and document professional nursing care utilizing the nursing process for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures. Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on assessment of the patient's baseline needs and response to care. Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers. Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of nursing care and act as team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit as assigned. Monitor and initiate corrective action to maintain the environment of care including equipment and material resources.Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings. Act as preceptor and support the development of other staff and formal learners.Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and in performance improvement activities. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN program. Exception:
Registered nurses hired between July 1, 2014 and April 11, 2021 without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are expected to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the program within five years of their start date. Registered nurses hired before July 1, 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN program
to remain in this job classification.
Experience Previous Behavioral Health experience PREFERRED, but not required.
Twelve months of appropriate clinical experience is required. At a manager's discretion, employees with 6 months of experience who are exceptional performers may be eligible for this level.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina.
CPI training required (will provide training to those who do not possess certification).
